hey,

Was just wondering about the heat of the heat gun when you're doing this. You say 'low' but do you have any idea what temperature that is? On my heat gun low is 60degress celcius, and high is 600degrees celcius

Thanks!

after i reflowed mine and applied arctic silver 5, the ps3 still seems to be running at a high temperature and fan speeds are high, on my system i blame it on the power pack... they start off cool, for a year gradually get hotter and hotter untill, failure possibly, but on my model the 60gb BC and i think all with 227 psu they've put the god damned CPU under all that heat from the power pack, this problem of course being fixed in later 80gb models by having the CPU and GPU under the blu ray drive and a power pack that doesn't seem to get hot at all

You can use a hair dryer, but you will have to keep it in one place longer than a heat gun. One last thing, i've seen videos on oven baking the motherboard but do you have to take off all the plastic parts before you do it.

Also, for those interested, unlocking your phone past this point is easy as well. Baseband 5.12.1, 5.13.4 and older basebands 4.26.8 and 5.11.7 have been unlocked. You don't even need to do anything fancy, really. Just follow these directions:

1. Open Cydia. (or install through blackra1n if you haven't yet)
2. Go to "Manage".
3. Click on "Sources".
4. Click on "Edit".
5. Click on "Add" and type in "http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com" (that's a zero)
6. Go to "Search" and type in "ultrasn0w 0.93"
7. Select the package and install it.
8. Reboot your phone.

Your iPhone should now be unlocked!

Need sum help. Let me start from the top. I recently caught the "YLoD", was mad as f*#k wen I did. I had my PS3 for about 3 years, so didnt bother calling sony cause from wat I read online, didnt wanna pay $150 for a refurbished 1. After a few min. I stumbled into Gilksy's video on youtube on how 2 fix this prob. Thought 2 myself I could do this n save myself $300 on buying the new PS3 Slim. After gettin all the tools I needed, I started to attempt the repair. After I was done puttin it all 2gether, I plugged it back up, crossed my fingers, n turned it on. Was happy wen I saw that PS3 logo come on that screen, but that changed with wat I heard next. The fan kept gettin louder n louder. went through a few stages till it sounded like it was gonna blow up. I quickly turned it off n went bak online. After reading a few threads, found out it mite be the thermal compound I used. Bought it from best buy. Dynex name-brand. So I ordered the 1 every1 seemed 2 be recommending, which was Arctic Silver 5. So I went on ebay n bought it 4 $5. Once I received it I did the whole process again, but the fan still does the same thing. Where did I go wrong? Could it be the power supply or the fan itself? Any1 have a clue?

@Andy,
Sorry to hear your troubles with your phat and thanks for the list. I too have heard/read those three steps and tested them thoroughly. But I still haven't been able to get it running.

I was able to open it up and look around inside. I found two things.

One, the system had be reflowed at least once before, by JBJ on 5-17-10. Side note: JBJ did a horrible job applying new thermal paste to the chips....very spotty.

Second, the connector that holds the ribbon cable to the motherboard was broken and wasn't holding the cable securely. So even if I had gotten it to work, the BRD probably wouldn't have played any discs. Thanks JBJ.

I still have it opened and am looking over the board for other possibilities as to why it isn't working and have come up with some questions.

Is there a chip(s) on the MB that all the video/audio runs through before it go out via HDMI/AV? Maybe that chip is the problem and it needs to be reflowed and not the main processors.

Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone?

Dismantled my 40GB PS3, used the cheap gun from Home Depot on the low setting, used Arctic Silver, put it back together and same thing happens. I was able to get my disk out using the tips I saw here in the comments (thanks), which was good because it was a rented DVD.

I heated both sides of the board for 30 seconds each in all four areas. Should I take it back apart and heat the one side of the entire board from edge to edge for minutes and minutes, or after doing it once and it not working is it worth it to try?

@Gilainey
Hey, sorry I didn't notice your comment here until now. You may not have heated up the solder enough to get a solid reflow. That's better than toasting it your first time though, you may want to try again and apply the heat a bit longer/more evenly

I'm having the exact same problem as NumbaG. I have tried using both the AV and HDMI Cables. (Both work as I have tried them on my PS3 Slim which I bought to replace the Broke Phat.) I have tried the PS3 on my Mates TV and tried all the reset tips peopel ahve offered on other thread's. Maybe you need to try a few of the idea's I'll list below NumbaG?

1, Hold the power button down for three beeps, the PS3 will power down, very quickly hold down the power button again. You will now get an innitial beep then two beeps cllse together. this might bring up a menu screen.
2, Again, hold down the Power button and wait for the second beep, remove finger and then hook up a controller with the usb cable connected. press the PS button. I have been told this also brings up the menu screen.
3, I have also been told to try pressing the hidden 'reset' button on the back of the Controller. Its close to L2, you need a pin to press it in. For some that also helps.

I have tried all of the above and none have worked. So I guess I will try reflowing the GPU and see if that helps.

Had this happen to me this weekend but was to lazy to do the whole re-flow thing then, was really peed off cos just upgraded from a wharfedale 26" HD ready to a samsung 37" Full HD 1080p, I got 10mins on MW2 then 3 beeps and YLOD on my beloved 40gb ps3, Did the reflow today and half hour later i was back online. ; ). Anyway i think it is only the 40gb and 80gb that have the fan test ability to retrive discs from a YLOD.

I have a Darth Vader version. I reflowed mine for only about 4 minutes on each side. And coated it with 2 layers of the thermal compound. It worked for about an hour and 30 minutes before it died. What do you think I did wrong?

Cheers, i reflowed my MB last night and all is well.

I made sure to back up all my saves as soon as it was running again. Hopefully it will last a while before it decides to ylod again. I've heard reflowing isnt a permanent fix

Thanks for all your help.

@ Danny C... the fan test/disc eject did not work on my YLOD PS3. But a reflow still did the trick to get it up and running. Twice.

@Mic-B... Thanks again for the info. After posting, your site was blocked at work for a while (thanks to the auto-filter picking it up as a gaming site). And then I kept forgetting to check when I got home for your answer. But I managed to find something on Instructables.com (I think) that said roughly what you said. Anyway... looks like you're no longer blocked and I can continue to peruse your site. Thanks again.

@DannyC,
If your referring to the fan test that should eject the disk, that doesn't work for everyone. I have no idea why this is, or what units work with it, but I know the results are sporadic. I wouldn't assume that the PSU is to blame, but it's a possibility. I would recommend using a no-contact infrared thermometer to take the guesswork out of your reflow so that you don't have to question that as the culprit. If it does in fact turn out to be your PSU, I wouldn't try fixing it myself. Your better off ordering a new one.
